All voluntary behavior, whether it be the approach and withdrawal responses of lower animals or the diverse behavioral repetoire of phylogenetically advanced species, is controlled by its consequences. Animals will work to obtain those stimuli, which by satisfying a particular need state, are positively reinforcing; they will avoid those which induce pain or discomfort. Reinforcement, its recognition and procurement, motivates an animal to react and, as such, ensures its continued survival. |
