Cross sections, pion momentum spectra, and angular distributions for the reactions $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) and $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,2${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) at a bombarding energy of 292 MeV were measured wth a 360\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} spectrometer. An enhancement of the cross-section ratio of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,2${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) to $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) relative to that of the elementary cross sections was observed, and is discussed in terms of various nuclear-medium effects including a double-\ensuremath{\Delta} production channel. |
