“Balance” is the keyword in Chapter 9. By comparing the tightrope over Niagara Gorge traversed by the Great Blondin in the 1850s to the tightrope we must walk to achieve sustainability, it illustrates why we must carefully consider any plan of action. Relying on generic leverage points, this chapter outlines an analytic approach to find areas where small efforts have big payoffs. It then locates eight areas of intervention on the system diagram and proposes several actions in each area. These areas separate into three levels: paradigm shifts, structure changes, and transition from present to future. The first of these levels is the most challenging and forms the foundation for the other two. Because we must be concerned with both present and future effects, actions in some areas appear to contradict one another; the chapter shows that we must resolve such contradictions. |
