Popis: One of the newest techniques for estimating earth-moving operations in the construction industry today is the use of computer simulation. The computer simulation is designed to incorporate probability distributions as a data base and to have the capability of simulating any type of scraper project. The most effective use of the model is for estimating purposes where it is proven to be a much better method than those currently used. It is validated by simulating the earth-moving operations on three scraper projects, a highway construction project, and the site excavation of two nuclear power plants. The simulated results in all three cases are found to be very close to the actual project results. The versatility of the program is cited in such areas as balancing scraper and pusher fleet sizes, determining which type of scraper to use under a given set of project conditions, and the production to expect from a specific fleet size.
