More electric aircraft (MEA) is a trending technology to move toward more efficient, reliable, and clean aviation transport. Due to this trend, the operation of advanced aircraft electrical systems encounters many additional challenges, especially when dealing with pulse power loads such as high-power radars and electromagnetic launch and recovery systems. This paper presents an effective two-layer power management architecture to deploy hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) for handling these challenges. Also, the power losses of electrical components are modeled appropriately by some quadratic functions. Then it proposes an iterative bi-level power management algorithm to solve the resulting mixed-integer non-convex problem efficiently, which aims to minimize simultaneously the system-wide power losses and power fluctuations of generators and switching decisions based on the battery-supercapacitor HESS. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed power management algorithm for MEA. |
