Popis: | DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.0165/jss2005.02.003 Many Nigerian soils are highly degraded and weathered, heavily leached and have limited capacities for supplying the plant nutrients and for holding enough moisture needed for high productivity, they are therefore ‘marginal’. Swamps, marshes, hills, mountains and uncultivated marginal lands are always in danger of erosion, drought and low structural stability and compaction. Generally, marginal lands do not guarantee sustainable cultivation without external inputs. However, Nigerian farmers continue to crop the marginal lands because of increasing population growth and the use of agricultural lands for housing, roads, industry and other activities. An attempt was therefore made to discuss some elements for marginal lands for high productivity and sustainability. |
