The issue of bacterial resistance to current classes of antibiotics is now well known and widely published (Levy, 1998; Chin and Marx, 1994). Indeed, unbeatable contagious infectious diseases have already generated significant medical crises in localized environments. Such crises may become more widespread, perhaps in the not too distant future. Laboratories worldwide have responded with highly creative research programs, many of which are reviewed in this book. Nonetheless, the successful discovery, development, and commercialization of new therapies that address bacterial resistance have proved challenging. |
