Popis: This case study describes a gang-violence reduction initiative in Aurora, Illinois, applying a problem-oriented public-health approach. The persistent violence was undermining business reinvestment, neighborhood revitalization, and property values. Prior responses to the gun-violence problem had limited effectiveness. In particular, a zero-tolerance policing strategy seemed to be doing more harm than good. Based on careful analysis, the response plan balanced three elements: (1) suppression that focused on gun-violence perpetrators who most incited gang violence, (2) intervention that was targeted at neighborhoods and households at risk for gang activity, and (3) prevention that gave at-risk youth positive individual attention to counter the group-esteem attraction of gang culture.
