This paper describes the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) that Logica Ltd produced for the Hydraulics Research Station (HRS). The DTM is a powerful tool for generating data for and presenting results from computational hydraulic river models. The software analyses data from a survey of the area covered by the model and sets up the database for later use. The DTM has a command language that allows the river valley to be covered by a set of computational cells and information generated in each cell for the hydraulic calculations. The software can plot maps from the database covering part or all of the river valley, showing river banks, contours, roads and flood limits. The ground surface is represented as strings of horizontal co-ordinates along contours of specified heights. A regular grid of spot levels proved to be too inflexible to reproduce the abrupt changes in ground gradient that occur naturally. Several algorithms are described including one which computes the flood limits directly from the contour strings. |
