Popis: The chapter examines feminist subtitling practices by non-professional/volunteer translators working for new emerging online Arab communities. The proliferation of social media and virtual communities has contributed to the increase in audiovisual translation (AVT) rendered by non-professional/volunteer translators who regularly mediate their own views to foreign contexts. To this end, the chapter draws on a number of growing research interests such as the role of non-professional subtitling in fostering international networking and solidarity, especially in regard to Arab feminism and digital media with a special focus on the case of Egypt. The chapter draws on examples extracted from English subtitles of videos produced in Arabic and uploaded by Nazra, a non-governmental organization of women activists in Egypt, to investigate the subtitlers’ work in making Arab women more visible in language and more heard in the West. Language ‘intensification’ in the subtitles and the interplay between verbal and non-verbal content are shown to present Arab feminism in an intensely constructed perspective.
