Popis: This report reviews the effect of tamoxifen on the bone mass as administered in the complementary endocrinotherapy after an operation for breast cancer, and also presents the influence of the treatment for the patients with reduced bone mass. Subjects were 144 patients with breast cancer whose bone mass was measured by means of microdensitometry from January 1990 to September 1991. The bone mass of the patients with breast cancer manifested a general tendency to be lower than that of healthy women as reported by Kasai. A comparison of the bone mass between 33 patients who had been given tamoxifen for 1 year at least and 81 patients without tamoxifen medication demonstrated no significant difference in terms of both bone density and bone cortex width. On the contrary the bone pattern turned out to be better in the tamoxifen group, which suggested that tamoxifen in these cases had no antiestrogenic effect on the bone, exerting even a secondary effect to maintain the bone mass. Administration of ipriflovone, a bone absorption suppressor, to patients with breast cancer whose bone mass had been reduced turned out the improvement rating of 75%. It indicates that the administration of ipriflavone positively contributes to the amelioration or maintenance of bone mass.
