Popis:	Antarctica and its surrounding seas have been isolated in a progressively colder polar position since the early Tertiary (Kennett 1977). Over the antarctic continental shelf, seawater temperatures are generally below 0 °C, and near ice-covered coastal inlets and in deep basins on the shelf, water temperatures may hover year-round on the freezing point of seawater at −1.87 °C (Littlepage 1965; Andriashev 1970).
