evidence that the destabilization of colloids by hydrolyzable metal salts does not occur by simple classical coagulation. In fact, it appears that coagulation is a complete misnomer for the process, since other mechanisms may be more important. The process is very complex and several mechanisms may be operating simultaneously; which mechanism controls the process depends upon the conditions. It is apparent, however, that except for conceptual purposes, applications of classical colloid theory, including the Schulze-Hardy rule, may be irrelevant to water treatment practice when using hydrolyzing metal salts such as aluminum sulfate. |
