Popis: | Nowadays ecological challenges in forestry in the context of climate change require the research on the nature of the occurrence of the wood anomalies in the process of growth and development of trees. Therefore, the study of the physical properties of the trunk wood anomalies is of biological and practical importance in the wood science and wood industries. The purpose of the research is to study the anisotropy of the swelling of straight-grained and wavy-grained wood within the radius and height of Abies alba Mill trunk. The research covered 105-year-old spruce-beech-fir forest stands in the forest biotopes of Bukovyna Carpathian with geographical location of latitude of 48°06ʹ02.34ʺ N, longitude of 25°13ʹ02.46ʺ E and altitude of 985 m asl. Altogether 12 tree models trees harvested in the trial plot of 0.5 ha to study differences between straight-grained and wavy-grained wood swelling anisotropy and wood density. Wood samples of 0.6 m in length were cut from each model trees at the height of 1.3 m and 7.0 m. The value of the cross anisotropy of the swelling of the straight-grained wood of Silver fir is more variable for wood samples from the peripheral zone of the trunk at the breast height. The parameters of tangential swelling of straight-grained wood ranged from 7.8 to 9.8 % at the breast height and at 7.0 m ‒ 7.5-9.9 %. The average values of the tangential swelling for wood samples taken on all sections of the trunk were 9.0 %. The values of tangential and radial swelling of the straight-grained wood were about 20 % higher than those of the wave-grained wood. The average values of the swelling coefficients of the straight-grained wood were estimated in the tangential direction by 0.30 and in the radial ‒ 0.14. There was no significant difference between the straight-grained wood densities within the trunk height. The density of straight-grained wood by moisture content of 8 % at the breast height was equal to 380 kg×m-3. The average values of the wavy-grained wood density were about 21 % higher than for the identical variables of straight-grained wood samples. The density of wet wood varied from 900 to 1100 kg×m-3 by the moisture content from 106 to 224 %. The authors have defined significant differences between straight-grained and wavy-grained wood of Silver fir in the swelling anisotropy and wood density. |
