In 1928, J. Heller 1 described an unusual deformity of the nails characterized by the development of a canal in the body of the nail plate running from the free edge to the root, which he termed "dystrophia unguium mediana canaliformis." No etiologic factor has been found. The following case is presented mainly because the nails cleared after removal of dental foci of infection. This fact may offer a possible clue to the causation. We believe this to be the first case described in the literature as occurring in North America. REPORT OF CASE Mrs. T. A., a white, 23 year old, married American housewife, reported for examination on May 27, 1942, stating that she had first noted trouble with her nails a year before.
