Expanded polystyrene concrete has the potential to be used in subway ballast and other underground constructions; however, the strength of expanded polystyrene concrete cannot be well controlled since expanded polystyrene is hydrophobic and tends to float during the preparation process. The orthogonal table L18 (37) was adopted to analyze effects of several factors on the compressive strength of expanded polystyrene concrete. Factors including water cement ratio, beads incorporation volume ratio, superplasticizer usage, dosage of additive I and II, sand ratio and fiber content were considered. Test results illustrate that the water cement ratio and beads incorporation volume ratio are two key factors that affect the compressive strength of expanded polystyrene concrete. Recommended mixture proportion is also proposed to realize the optimum strength of expanded polystyrene concrete. The orthogonal test can help systematically investigate effects of mixture materials on the strength of expanded polystyrene concretes and optimize the design of mixture proportion. |
