Inflammation is intermediated by a multiplicity of soluble factors, including a group of secreted polypeptides known as cytokines. Cytokines are small glycoproteins produced by a number of cell types, predominantly leucocytes. Inflammatory cytokines can be divided into two groups: those involved in acute inflammation and those responsible for chronic inflammation. They play a major role in communication within the immune system regulating variety of physiological and pathological functions in the body. This review article describes the role of cytokines in some of the common disorders. |
