Al electrodeposition from chloroaluminate ionic liquid

Popis: Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to investigate the mechanism of Al electrodeposition for an ionic liquid with a 2∶1 molar ratio of AlCl3/[EMIM]Br (1-methyl-3-ethyl imidazolium bromide) at room temperature 25±1°C. Results indicated that the Al electrodeposition from this ionic liquid is a quasi-reversible process. Instantaneous nucleation with diffusion controlled growth of the Al electrode was demonstrated. The constant phase element was present in the electrical double layer, with α = 0·37. The kinetic complications during the reaction may be attributed to the controlled cooperative processes of electron transfer and mass transport. The potential effects on the characteristics of Al deposits were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
