Perturbation experiments and a study of the fluctuation in the community and its response to environmental fluctuation are the only ways to evaluate community stability. It may be shown a posteriori that some structural features are correlated with aspects of stability, but so far, we have no theoretical reason to consider any structural feature to be an a priori sign of stability (see e.g. Goodman 1975). Similarly, the perturbation experiments seem to be the best way (if not the only one) to recognize the functional relationships within the community. In order to evaluate the stability and to get better insight into functional relationships within the community, we conducted a set of perturbation experiments. |
