Popis: | Dysfunction along the gut-brain axis (GBA) is increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In addition to its neurodevelopmental deficits, ASD is also characterized by a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, which increase in proportion to the severity of ASD. Moreover, many studies have found that those with ASD have an altered intestinal microbiome composition. Given these associations, we propose to examine the use and effect of probiotics, prebiotics, and antibiotics on the gut-brain-microbiome axis as they pertain to the behavioral manifestations of ASD. Current data is inconsistent across the field, and the quality of individual studies is highly variable, and existing reviews only examine prebiotics, probiotics, or antibiotics separately. We hypothesize that by systematically examining the interplay between these three microbiome-based interventions, a broader trend may be elucidated regarding the efficacy of gut-microbiome based intervention in ASD that will guide future investigations. |
