Popis: | The sensitive element of this gauge consists of two long coaxial coils which form a mutual inductance. One coil is wound on the outside and the other inside a cylindrical tube of superconductor which, when resistanceless, screens the coils from each other. If the element is partly immersed in liquid helium, that part of the superconducting tube which is above the liquid is driven normal by the heat of the current in the primary winding, while that part below the liquid remains resistanceless. Hence, there is only coupling between those turns of the windings above the liquid and, for a given alternating current through the primary, the a.c. voltage measured across the secondary is directly related to the height of the liquid. |
