A new aluminium alkoxide, the aluminium ethylenedioxide, has been prepared by the reaction of ethylene glycol with a solution of aluminium sec -butoxide in benzene. Thermogravimetric analysis of the product thus obtained shows that it contains some amount of adsorbed ethylene glycol and leads to the isolation, at 150°C, of a pure aluminium ethylenedioxide having seven coordinated ethylene glycol molecules for four aluminium atoms. A tetrameric structure is proposed, analogous to that already reported for other aluminium alkoxides, containing one central octahedral aluminium and three peripheral tetrahedral aluminium atoms; five ethylene glycol molecules are coordinated via two oxygen atoms and two are coordinated via one oxygen atom only. The i.r. spectra are discussed. |
