Popis: In order to investigate the progression of tensile strength at the joints of laser beam welded sheet metal, theresults of an optical measurement procedure applied during a tension test are being utilised. With the aid of avideo camera and an interactive interpretation of the diagrams, the tensile strength of the samples equipped with a measuring grid may be observed during the tension test. This measuring device allows for the investigation of its viscoelasticity and eliminates the local tensile strength in the area of the joint including theheat affected zone. It is our intention to identify the properties of the sheet metal joints, which may serve as anaid for optimizing future production processes and characteristic features. Keywords: Laser beam welding, sheet metals, tailored blanks, optical strain testing, image analysis 1. INTRODUCTION Laser beam welding technology has found its application in individual and serial production, because of itsflexibility of treatment, the amounts involved and the range of products. As a result, a constructive design ofthe joints can be realised, which cannot be achieved with the aid of conventional manufacturing processes, orelse only with a vast amount of effort. Laser beam welding has especially proven itself to be an asset in the
