This paper provides the basic concept and the applications of Rogowski coils in today's transforming electrical industry. This type of current transformer belongs to the family of Non conventional Current Transformer (NCIT). We will recall the basic concepts, the calculations and the real benefits of the Rogowski coil compared to a conventional current transformer, and how the design was improved by the various implementation that were made in the 1990's and early 2000's. We will emphases the inherent advantages of Rogowski coils such as noise reduction and extended measuring ranges resulting from digital integration. Industrial applications are discussed within the gas insulated substations (GIS). This is the GIS that is industrially manufactured today. A brief description of the electronic supplied to the NCIT is described. The new laboratories applications is presented for the measurement of pre-arc and post-arc current after interruption of short circuit current in circuit breakers. |
