Popis: Terai region (Lowlands) of North India consists of alluvial deposits, which are, saturated throughout the year. Conventional shallow foundations are difficult to construct due to the flooding of the foundation pits. An innovative short rigid composite foundation with granular core is being proposed for the foundations in this region. The steining is assumed to be rigid while the granular core is compressible. The proposed foundation is analyzed using a linear stress-displacement response of the interface between the outer surface of the steining and the ground which is treated as non-homogeneous (the stiffness of the interface increases with depth). Possible transfer of load from the steining to granular core inside or vice versa is considered in the interaction analysis. Extensive parametric studies quantify the effects of various parameters on the settlement of the proposed foundation.
