The knowledge of snow crystal shape and riming is important in understanding various physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere. A method is presented to obtain information about shape and riming of snow crystals above the ground by use of vertical Doppler radar. An empirical relation between the observed degree of riming and the mean Doppler velocity of snow crystals is established. It is found that Doppler velocities of less than 0.5 m/s are a sign of weakly rimed or unrimed particles whereas 1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s are expected for rimed crystals and graupel, respectively. |
