Popis: The current wireless industry transition from circuit-centric to packet-centric networks is by necessity an evolution not a revolution. While new multimedia services create new revenue, basic voice and messaging services migrate to wireless networks. Meanwhile, new and existing investments in network equipment and handsets must be protected and high quality service must be maintained. To support both service providers and subscribers, while setting the stage for full deployment of packet-centric services, Alcatel-Lucent's CDMA2000∗-1× CDMA system is being renewed via Internet Protocol (IP). The CDMA2000–1x IP evolution plan reduces capital and operating expenses while meeting competitive price pressures and delivering improved network and service quality. Radio access network (RAN) transport has been IP-enabled. Sub-rate encoded voice is switched in packet switches over packet networks evolving from current soft handoff networks. The evolution is compatible with packet-centric services including Voice over IP (VoIP), allowing service providers to begin to build IP service competence and deploy the networks necessary for tomorrow. © 2007 Alcatel-Lucent.
