The primary goals of mechanical ventilation are to improve gas exchange and relieve respiratory distress while allowing time for the resolution of respiratory failure. Because mechanical ventilation can cause ventilator-induced lung injury, a third goal is to reduce and prevent damage caused by the ventilator. Therefore, personalizing ventilator management based on a patient’s underlying disease process and physiology is imperative. A brief overview of mechanical ventilation is provided, but this chapter focuses on strategies to reduce and prevent lung injury during mechanical ventilation, as well as common causes and fixes of ventilator asynchrony. |
