Popis: On the 7th June 2021 a trial trench evaluation was undertaken on land at Longdene House, Hedgehog Lane, Haslemere, Surrey, on behalf of A.L Management Ltd, prior to groundworks associated to a new development of a pair of semidetached houses. Two 10.0m x 1.40m trenches were excavated and revealed an intact stratigraphy. Both trenches were located outside of the general footprint of the new build, due to an extant greenhouse and vegetable garden. Trench 1 revealed an intact stratigraphy and an undisturbed natural which consisted of a coarse sand with mid-sized sandstone pebbles. The subsoil did produce a small assemblage of 20th century pottery sherds. Trench 2 revealed one feature; a ditch with a rectangular cut, aligned east to west. It produced a handful of finds including lumps of coke and 19th and 20th century pottery. This feature is clearly related to the history of the house and could well have been a trench foundation to a small 'L' shaped building visible on the 1917 edition OS. Because of the absence of ancient features or finds, no further work is recommended.
