Glucose Control for T1D Patients Based on Interval Models

Popis: In this paper, a new glucose control strategy for patients with type 1 diabetes based on the dynamic simulation of an interval model is presented. Particularly, a safety scheme based on an interval insulin-on-board estimation model for artificial pancreas systems is designed, which includes a combination of soft and hard insulin-on-board constraints that can be implemented as part of an automatic control strategy. This control strategy is tested in 10 virtual type 1 diabetes patients from the UVa/Padova simulator approved by the Food and Drug Administration agency of the United States, showing a satisfactory performance in comparison to the same control system without the safety scheme. The proposed approach avoids episodes of mild and severe hypoglycemia under demanding assessment scenarios.
