Popis: Performance analysis was carried out for a 1.8 m diameter propeller for use in a multicopter-type Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) with a Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) of 600 kg. Three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were carried out for various pitch settings to identify the pitch producing the best performance for a single propeller and the pitch least affecting the interference flow for fixed-spaced counter-rotating propellers. In this analysis, which used the program STAR-CCM+, the MRF (Moving Reference Frame) technique was used with the compressive flow condition and the k-(j) SST turbulence model. The Figure of Merit (FM) and the Interference Power Factor (${k}_{int}$) were introduced to compare the performance of propellers and the hovering time of the conceptually designed vehicle. The CFD investigation shows that the interference effect is similar to that according to theory, and the lower propeller affects the upper propeller through a distorted flow orientation from upstream, especially at low pitches. The flight time of a large multi copter with currently available battery energy density is so limited that the pure battery-powered air vehicle is appropriate for short-time missions with a payload of 100 kg or more.
