Publisher Summary Interest in the chemistry of monosaccharides has grown considerably in the last few years because of an increase in their use as chiral starting materials in synthesis and the continuing discovery of biologically active compounds that contain monosaccharide units as integral parts of their structures. This has resulted in the selection of certain key compounds as targets for synthesis by internationally renowned research groups. Synthesis reactions of monosaccharides include Diels-Alder types, oxirane ring openings, Wittig reactions, and organometallic reagents. This chapter studies the conformation, chelation, and chromatography of monosaccharides with relevant examples. The reactions and derivatives of the alditols in asymmetric synthesis, chiral synthetic intermediates (chirons), their reagents and catalysts and various metal complexes of oxidation and oxidation products, cyclic acetals, esters, ethers are discussed. Other types of monosaccharides such as anhydroalditols, deoxyalditols, aminoalditols, and deoxynitroalditols and their sulphur containing derivatives are also described. |
