The generation of virtual environments allows high-lighting the scenic beauty of underground environments on easy-to-access virtual platforms. Their immediate applications are multiple, contributing to develop research, speleological tourism, and conservation of these fragile environments of natural heritage. Nonetheless, commercial software still presents important restrictions for the virtual modeling of large volumes of information. As a case study, this research illustrates the processing of information acquired through the scanning of the Santisima Virgen Cave, located in the Napo province of Ecuador. These limitations are detailed throughout the application of standard information processing techniques in 3D modeling (point clouds generation, data debugging, meshing, texturing, and animation). |
