Popis: This chapter uses concepts derived from Gramsci— “hegemony”, “organic intellectuals”, “contradictory consciousness”—to analyze the relationship between the worldview of blue-collar workers and the ideological discourses aimed at them (1) in popular weekend tabloids, (2) in political education campaigns by organized labor. Documentary evidence is provided for the heterogeneous nature of working class consciousness—Gramsci’s “contradictory consciousness”. It is argued that both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic forces work up different strands of this heterogeneous worldview. The general conclusion from this data is that hegemonic forces do not necessarily need the active allegiance of the working class to remain in control. An equally effective strategy may be to strengthen tendencies in the working class to remain indifferent to the public realm, to refuse to develop a social and political ideology and look instead for individualistic or “imaginary” solutions to the “hidden injuries of class”.
