Popis:	An overview is given of the evolution of perinatal medicine from its origin to its current state. Emphasis is placed on the birth of this new discipline in Europe and the USA, as well as on the contributions made to it by different countries. The main protagonists of subsequent changes are highlighted, as are the advances made in perinatal technology. To do so, the evolution and difficulties in introducing modern perinatal medicine are discussed. To conclude, current maternal, perinatal and infant mortality rates are compared with past figures.
