Popis: Deployment of sustainable resources has become blooming in the eco-friendly research field. Asian Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) is nature’s perennial gift and called as “tree of life” due to the usage of this tree in all the aspects of a self-reliant lifestyle of the community. Borassus flabellifer is an official tree of Tamil Nadu and it has a lot of nutritive and nutraceutical values that are well studied and reported. In the present study, this palm fruit pulp extract was utilized in designing the fluorescent sensors for the detection of metal ions through UV–visible and fluorescence spectral techniques. The fully ripened palm fruit pulp was extracted in the DMSO solvent which showed a green fluorescence under short UV in the presence of Fe2+ ions. It showed a strong fluorescence emission at 420 nm in the presence of Fe2+ ions and a reasonable fluorescence emission for Cd2+ ion when excited at 320 nm. The palm fruit extract contains a mixture of different organic compounds with different functional groups. The integrated binding sites present in the compounds of palm fruit were responsible for the fluorescence emission towards Cd2+ and Fe2+ ions. This revealed that the Palmyra palm fruit extract acts as a turn ON fluorescent sensor for selective and sensitive detection of Fe2+ ions.
