The term “menopause” is a key word for health professionals caring for the aging woman. It makes no difference whether you call it “change of life” or “climacteric” or “the change” or in fact “normal aging.” It is a fact of life that there are significant changes in hormone production whether the ovaries are removed surgically or whether they atrophy normally. There are 3 major hormones produced by the ovary, namely, estrogen, progestin, and androgen. There is therefore a responsibility for the health professional to come to grips with the care of the aging woman. The hormone deficiency should be taken into account. During the next 10 years, there will be a dramatic increase in the number of women who are entering the menopause and we as obstetricians and gynecologists should be the prime health providers for the care of this population. |
