The development of electron accelerators has led over the last decades to technologies that permit to build machines of great energies and power. For energies up to 30–40 MeV research and practical applications are numerous and they are considered in some detail. Medical and radiological uses, nondestructive testing, injectors to larger accelerators, storage rings and free electron lasers are typical for medium sized acclerators. Of special interest is the use of electron accelerators for production of short-lived isotopes and activation analysis. Special attention is paid to a possibility of X-ray production through transition, parametric and channeling radiations, as well as a possibility of creation of a tunable monochromatic gamma-ray source up to 1 MeV energy. Thus a medium powered electron accelerator asa universal radiation source of electrons, bremsstrahlung, X-rays and neutrons is a modern and versatile facility, that can now be considered to take the place of research nuclear reactors. |
