A prospective randomized study was performed for the first time to assess the metaphylactic efficacy of alkali citrate therapy in calcium oxalate stone formers. Patients with regular stone formation — ie, at least one stone annually over the previous three years — were recruited and randomized into two groups of five each. They were given either general metaphylactic instructions (abundant liquid intake and dietary restrictions) plus alkali citrate (group I) or metaphylactic instructions alone (group II). |
