Reference groups influence the behaviour of the individual in an important way. As the peer group provides in specific needs of the adolescent, it can become an important reference group and consequently influence his behaviour in a significant way. Research results show that the peer group as a reference group also has an influence on the sexual behaviour of the adolescent, and this influence could be negative in nature. Research results are however still inconclusive in this regard, and especially in South Africa more research should be undertaken in this field. Knowledge regarding the positive aspects of the peer group could be used for the development of peer-group counselling. |
