Seventy-two trenches were opened mechanically under archaeological supervision and features investigated by hand. The evaluation confirmed that many geophysical anomalies were of archaeological interest as well as locating additional deposits on the site. The southern part of the site was shown to be occupied by a Roman triple ditched enclosure around two probable cremation burials. Elsewhere, several ditches were of medieval and Roman date or undated but probably Roman, in addition to two pits, one of which is definitely of Roman date. An undated pit and posthole could be either Iron Age or Saxon. Post-medieval or modern quarries were also noted, and post-medieval ridge and furrow. |
