Popis: Japan's minimal defense spending is organic in nature, with an institutional basis. Regardless of strategic considerations, Japanese defense spending habits will change only gradually. Since U.S.‐Japanese relations are crucial to the peace and security of East Asia, the United States has no recourse but to shoulder the burden for the defense of Japan. At the same time, the United States must continue to prod Japan to acquire a more realistic defense capability. Japan must be persuaded to assume more of the fiscal and physical burden of its own defense.
