Popis: | Surge tectonics was originally introduced in a primitive form by Meyerhoff and Meyerhoff (1977), who then called it asthenosphere surge. These Authors reasoned that, because of the presence of "soft" mobile asthenosphere between the outer lithosphere and the strictosphere (hard mantle beneath the asthenosphere), differential lag as a result of the Earth's rotation would occur between the lithosphere and the strictosphere. Such a lag should produce a relative eastward movement of mobile material within the asthenosphere. Morris et al. (1990) used this primitive form of the hypothesis to explain, with a surprising degree of success, the tectonic evolution of the Caribbean Basin. |
