Our understanding of the regulation of hematopoiesis has vastly increased during the past decade with the discovery of an extensive network of growth factors and interleukins that is able to stimulate or inhibit at different levels along the differentiation pathway from the pluripotent stem cells to the mature blood cell. Nevertheless questions concerning the way in which the production of these factors is regulated still remain open to debate. While no one questions that the level of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) is dictated mainly by the oxygen supply to the tissues, early doubts have been raised whether this is the only regulating system. |
