The amount of histone H1 ° increases relative to other H1 subtypes in terminally differentiated cells, and its expression has been associated with the onset of differentiation. We have studied the kinetics of H1 ° accumulation in mouse erythroleukemia (MEL) cells and found that the levels of H1 ° reflect the rate of cell proliferation rather than the state of differentiation. This suggests that changes in the relative amount of H1 ° during MEL cell differentiation are primarily a consequence of cell cycle arrest. |
