Popis: BACKGROUND: In this second out of a series of 4 articles on possible reference sciences of physiotherapy, medicine and sports sciences are portrayed. The 2 disciplines are very close to physiotherapy in terms of history and topic. Therefore they are presumably relevant for physiotherapy's present professional practice as well as its theoretical development. At the same time, such closeness demands also, amongst others, knowledge about the differences to the neighbouring disciplines. OBJECTIVE/METHOD: Initially both disciplines are briefly outlined by experts irrespective of their importance for physiotherapy. Hereby special attention is paid to the discipline's historical development, its over the years emerged subsets, its central purpose and current challenges. Afterwards they portray a first exemplary transfer of the content into physiotherapy. This applies to its potential relevance for theoretical discourse, setup of theories and models as well as physiotherapy practice. RESULTS: Both medicine as well as sports science offer useful insights for physiotherapy science. In addition, their disciplinary development and enhancement may give orientation for physiotherapy and many impulses to its further shaping. For a long time medicine was a main landmark for physiotherapy development, however, currently a growing emancipation of physiotherapy becomes apparent. CONCLUSIONS: The closer neighbouring disciplines are topically related to physiotherapy the more it is suggested to directly adopt both contents and findings. Nevertheless now more than ever it is necessary to analyse the differences of the disciplines and consider them in the transfer process.
