Yosa Buson's work as a painter did have an impact on his haikai, and this chapter explores some ways of thinking about how the two forms of Buson's practice intersected. The chapter begins with an overview of the most influential visual interpretation of Buson's hokku, Masaoka Shiki's reading of Buson as representative of the ideal of shasei, or realism, in haiku. The chapter examines two areas that provide other meaningful contexts in which to consider the interaction of painting and poetry in Buson's haikai. The first area is Buson's relationships with his patrons, and the role that his haikai contacts played in helping to secure supporters and customers for his paintings.
