Popis: | The study assessed the damage caused by polluted reservoir Umiam on the kidneys of Cyprinus carpio L. through light and electron microscopy. Histological analysis of the kidneys showed degenerated glomeruli, tubular degeneration, pyknotic nuclei in the hematopoietic tissue and tubular cell necrosis. Scanning electron microscopy revealed abnormal outgrowths at the surface of the tissue and disturbance in alignment of the tubules and some extraneous depositions on the surface. Transmission electron microscopy showed nephrons with deformed and irregular-shaped nuclei, fragmented RER, highly condensed mitochondria with partially damaged cristae, vacuolization, glomerulus with swollen and fused pedicles and increased filtration slit. These abnormalities were not observed in the same fish species inhabiting a relatively less polluted water body of Rural Resource and Training Centre (RRTC), located in the same area as that of the reservoir Umiam. Significance of the study in relation to fish health and polluted water body are discussed. |
