Protoplasts were subjected to increasing doses of ultra-violet irradiation to determine the effect on nucleic acid and protein synthesis, and also on survival and cell colony forming ability. The ability of soy bean protoplasts to form cell colonies was destroyed by exposure to u.v.-irradiation exceeding 192 ergs/mm 2 . However, as measured by vital staining, over 90 per cent of the protoplasts remained viable for at least 24 hr after exposure to u.v.-irradiation up to 1920 ergs/mm 2 . While DNA and RNA synthesis were sharply reduced by increasing u.v.-dose, protein synthesis was inhibited to a lesser extent. |
