Popis:	The spectral theory of higher order difference operators is studied by means of asymptotic summation, thereby extending many results of differential operators to the discrete setting. The spectra of degenerate fourth-order operators are also investigated. The results are then compared with those of corresponding differential operators. Even though there are many similarities between both classes of operators, the spectral results may be quite distinct.
